How the Virginia gas options differ
Virginia SCC’s gas guidance explains bill components and the roles of weather and wholesale price changes. Supplier or transportation availability must be verified with the particular utility.
Check the business class, utility program and service conditions before assuming that every Virginia gas account can change suppliers.

This map covers the utility routes represented by our Virginia city guides. It is not an exhaustive statewide utility or supplier roster. A community or county listing does not confirm an individual service address.

Virginia utility-specific gas choice — 2 represented gas companies
Represented companies: Washington Gas; Columbia Gas of Virginia.
Virginia SCC directs customers to utility-specific natural-gas choice information. Washington Gas and Columbia gas arrangements must be checked against the actual company, class and supplier participation. A regional SCC map is an approximation; it cannot determine a property’s eligibility or substitute for the account’s bill.
Cost scope: Utility supply alternative, supplier fees and retained transportation/delivery. Operating question: Utility-specific enrollment, current supplier participation and return rules.

Atmos Energy Virginia: Atmos Energy Virginia commercial service
Blacksburg identifies Atmos as its gas provider. Atmos publishes Virginia tariff information separately from its Kentucky, Colorado and Texas operations. A Washington Gas or Columbia Virginia choice description cannot establish the terms for this Atmos meter.
Cost scope: Virginia gas sales component and any qualified transportation costs. Operating question: Effective Virginia tariff and the utility’s written eligibility confirmation.
City of Charlottesville gas: City of Charlottesville gas commercial service
Charlottesville operates a municipal gas system serving the city and portions of Albemarle County. Its department provides a gas-service area and installation process. A Charlottesville mailing address outside the municipal boundary still needs the actual gas company established before applying a tariff.
Cost scope: Municipal customer, usage and gas-supply components. Operating question: Service-area confirmation and any installation or capacity review.
Virginia Natural Gas: Virginia Natural Gas commercial service
Virginia Natural Gas publishes its own service-area, neighborhood projects and tariff resources for Hampton Roads. Parts of Chesapeake and Suffolk also fall within Columbia’s region on the SCC map. The premises’ gas company decides which commercial schedule and any transportation terms to review.
Cost scope: VNG supply, delivery and applicable rate adjustments. Operating question: Gas-company boundary, transportation conditions and service agreement.
Danville Utilities: Danville Utilities commercial service
Danville’s utility budget describes municipal natural-gas service within the city and adjacent suburban areas. Its gas and water footprint is much smaller than its electric service region. The city also publishes commercial transportation material; request the currently effective gas schedule and its qualification rather than inferring availability from electric coverage.
Cost scope: Municipal sales charges versus transportation and customer-owned supply. Operating question: Effective city gas schedule and any separate service agreement.
Richmond Department of Public Utilities: Richmond Department of Public Utilities commercial service
Richmond Gas Works describes service in Richmond, Henrico and portions of Chesterfield and Hanover. City limits are not the full gas footprint. Conversely, a Richmond-region mailing address can require another utility’s tariff, so retain the legal gas company from the bill.
Cost scope: Municipal customer, delivery and gas-cost components. Operating question: Gas company, service availability and any applicable commercial contract.
Roanoke Gas: Roanoke Gas commercial service
Roanoke Gas serves the Roanoke Valley and provides a commercial-service route for establishing gas availability and project requirements. The SCC’s regional map distinguishes its system from Atmos and Columbia. Check the actual Roanoke Gas commercial tariff before treating another Virginia utility’s supplier program as available.
Cost scope: Gas supply component and retained service charges. Operating question: Existing connection, available capacity and company-specific supply terms.
Territory and program exceptions to keep visible
Blacksburg’s utility directory and natural-gas map identify Atmos. The town’s water service, AEP electricity and the Virginia Tech electric system are separate from gas delivery. Blacksburg source notes.
A practical Virginia account decision
A budget payment plan is not the same as a fixed commodity price. Compare charges for actual consumption and read the supplier’s price and renewal provisions separately.
Record the utility’s legal service company, commercial rate code, billed unit and supply arrangement in one account row. Keep a separate row for each meter even where a supplier offers one master agreement. Normalize gas units before entering rates; compare constant supply prices and fees only after the available service and cost scope are clear.
