How the South Dakota gas options differ
The South Dakota PUC maintains utility-specific natural gas tariffs, including transportation-related schedules and agreements. This is the starting point for commercial eligibility.
Determine whether the premises are served by an investor-owned or municipal system and identify the available rate schedule. A transmission pipeline near a city is not evidence of retail choice.

South Dakota tariff-specific commercial service — 2 represented gas companies
Represented companies: NorthWestern Energy; MidAmerican Energy.
The South Dakota PUC lists distinct commercial sales and transportation schedules by gas company. NorthWestern lists Rate 87 transportation; MidAmerican lists monthly-metered transportation and transportation of customer-owned gas. These require their own qualification and agreements, rather than statewide small-business open enrollment.

Montana-Dakota Utilities: Montana-Dakota sales versus transportation
Montana-Dakota publishes separate state tariffs with firm general sales and transportation schedules. A similarly named city in another state or a Black Hills Choice Gas packet is not evidence of participation here. Start from the operating state and the actual service category.
Cost scope: Purchased-gas adjustment under sales versus transportation and retained gas obligations. Operating question: Transportation qualification, balancing and any negotiated service agreement.

Watertown Municipal Utilities: Watertown Municipal Utilities commercial service
South Dakota PUC lists Watertown among its municipally owned gas utilities, separately from NorthWestern, MidAmerican and Montana-Dakota. Obtain Watertown’s own commercial gas rate and fuel adjustment. A nearby investor-owned company’s transportation schedule is not an enrollment authorization for this municipal account.
Cost scope: Local gas rate and any gas-cost adjustment. Operating question: Municipal gas service conditions and availability of the requested arrangement.
Territory and program exceptions to keep visible
The PUC’s community table identifies MidAmerican for Yankton gas service. Its separate electric-provider column must not be used to select NorthWestern’s gas transportation tariff for this city. Yankton source notes.
A practical South Dakota account decision
Review firm versus interruptible delivery and the cost of metering or scheduling changes. Obtain a utility-approved enrollment path before committing to third-party supply.
Record the utility’s legal service company, commercial rate code, billed unit and supply arrangement in one account row. Keep a separate row for each meter even where a supplier offers one master agreement. Normalize gas units before entering rates; compare constant supply prices and fees only after the available service and cost scope are clear.
