How the Texas gas options differ

The Railroad Commission oversees gas-utility matters within its jurisdiction. Texas electricity shopping brands and electric delivery territories do not establish natural gas supplier eligibility.

Start with the gas distribution company and its transportation tariff. Oncor and AEP Texas are not a substitute for identifying the gas utility on this account.

Utility and commercial service map

This map covers the utility routes represented by our Texas city guides. It is not an exhaustive statewide utility or supplier roster. A community or county listing does not confirm an individual service address.

Texas gas tariff and transportation review — 5 represented gas companies

Represented companies: Atmos Energy West Texas; Atmos Energy Mid-Tex; Texas Gas Service; CenterPoint Energy Houston gas; CenterPoint Energy South Texas gas.

Texas electricity shopping rules do not establish natural-gas supplier choice. Gas service depends on the distributor, rate jurisdiction and tariff. A transportation arrangement must be qualified for the account; compare it with the actual utility commercial sales alternative and account for the remaining delivery obligations.

Cost scope: Commercial sales gas-cost component versus supplier gas, transport and retained charges. Operating question: Transportation agreement, capacity, balancing and the utility’s accepted supplier arrangements.

Corpus Christi Gas: Corpus Christi Gas commercial service

Corpus Christi Gas offers municipal residential and commercial gas service. Its city gas-service route covers new service and account needs. A business should obtain the city’s commercial rate category and any available transportation terms directly rather than applying a Houston or Atmos gas schedule.

Cost scope: Municipal gas customer, delivery and supply charges. Operating question: City gas service application and any separate transportation qualification.

CPS Energy: CPS Energy transportation service agreement

CPS publishes a transportation rate for customers with a separate service agreement to move customer-owned gas through its facilities for their own use. That agreement requirement matters: San Antonio’s municipal service is not an automatic extension of Texas electricity shopping.

Cost scope: Utility sales alternative versus transport service and customer-owned gas costs. Operating question: Adequate facilities, executed service agreement and gas-delivery responsibility.

A practical Texas account decision

For an eligible transportation account, compare commodity, basis, pipeline capacity and local delivery as separate components. Keep operational curtailment provisions in the decision alongside price.

Record the utility’s legal service company, commercial rate code, billed unit and supply arrangement in one account row. Keep a separate row for each meter even where a supplier offers one master agreement. Normalize gas units before entering rates; compare constant supply prices and fees only after the available service and cost scope are clear.

Ask about your utility, supply terms or renewal. Keep account numbers and documents out of the initial inquiry.
