How the Pennsylvania gas options differ
The PUC’s official gas-shopping site provides a business shopping path. Delivery remains with the natural gas distribution company while supply terms are reviewed separately.
Choose the business category and the correct distribution company. Confirm the applicability and period of the utility comparison rate before evaluating a quote.
Utility and commercial service map
This map covers the utility routes represented by our Pennsylvania city guides. It is not an exhaustive statewide utility or supplier roster. A community or county listing does not confirm an individual service address.
| Gas service company | Review route | Classification to establish |
|---|---|---|
| UGI Utilities | UGI gas supply region and choice | UGI gas class, supply region and participating supplier |
| Peoples Natural Gas | Pennsylvania distribution-company gas choice | Legal gas distribution company, commercial tariff and accepted supplier |
| PECO Gas | Pennsylvania distribution-company gas choice | Legal gas distribution company, commercial tariff and accepted supplier |
| National Fuel Gas Distribution | Pennsylvania distribution-company gas choice | Legal gas distribution company, commercial tariff and accepted supplier |
| Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania | Pennsylvania distribution-company gas choice | Legal gas distribution company, commercial tariff and accepted supplier |
| Philadelphia Gas Works | PGW firm transportation market | PGW commercial/industrial monthly-metered category and accepted supplier |
UGI Utilities: UGI gas supply region and choice
UGI organizes gas municipalities into supply regions and publishes a supplier directory. Its gas coverage differs from its much smaller electric territory. Identify the gas supply region and class, then confirm that a listed supplier accepts that commercial account and offers terms for the desired period.
Cost scope: Applicable utility Price to Compare versus supply, fees and delivery exclusions. Operating question: Regional supplier participation, enrollment and contract renewal provisions.
Pennsylvania distribution-company gas choice — 4 represented gas companies
Represented companies: Peoples Natural Gas; PECO Gas; National Fuel Gas Distribution; Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania.
PAGasSwitch separates the distribution company from competing gas supply. Pennsylvania gas companies have different tariffs, benchmark components and supplier requirements. The utility’s delivery service remains, and a state supplier license alone is not a quote or completed enrollment.
Cost scope: Account-appropriate utility comparison component versus full supplier terms. Operating question: Class-specific supplier availability, authorization and first-bill reconciliation.
Program Pennsylvania. Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania: tariff and service municipalities; Nationalfuel Pa Tariff; Peco Gas Tariff; Peoples Natural Gas: current Pennsylvania tariff and territory.
Philadelphia Gas Works: PGW firm transportation market
PGW’s firm transportation supplier application expressly addresses commercial and industrial monthly-metered customers. It is a utility-specific supplier approval process. Philadelphia gas procurement should use PGW requirements rather than PECO’s suburban gas tariff or a generic statewide supplier list.
Cost scope: Utility supply alternative, supplier charges and retained PGW delivery items. Operating question: PGW supplier qualification and accepted enrollment, separate from state licensing.
Territory and program exceptions to keep visible
Peoples Natural Gas lists Altoona under Blair County in its tariff territory. Columbia Gas’s Pennsylvania materials should not be substituted for this Peoples service route. Altoona source notes.
Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania lists New Castle in Lawrence County. Do not infer Peoples service from the wider western Pennsylvania region. New Castle source notes.
A practical Pennsylvania account decision
Review commodity price, monthly supplier charges, cancellation provisions and renewal notices together. A posted price-to-compare can change and is not a forecast for an entire multi-year contract.
Record the utility’s legal service company, commercial rate code, billed unit and supply arrangement in one account row. Keep a separate row for each meter even where a supplier offers one master agreement. Normalize gas units before entering rates; compare constant supply prices and fees only after the available service and cost scope are clear.
