How the Indiana gas options differ

The OUCC describes NIPSCO Choice as voluntary and warns that enrolling may or may not save money. NIPSCO continues to charge for transportation and distribution.

Verify that this is a NIPSCO gas account and confirm its eligible class. Other Indiana utilities require their own program and tariff review.

Utility and commercial service map

This map covers the utility routes represented by our Indiana city guides. It is not an exhaustive statewide utility or supplier roster. A community or county listing does not confirm an individual service address.

CenterPoint Energy Indiana North: CenterPoint Indiana North transportation

Indiana North’s gas tariff identifies Indiana Gas Company as the operating company and lists its own service locations and rate schedules. Keep it separate from CenterPoint Indiana South, Ohio and Houston: the common brand does not make the transportation eligibility rules interchangeable.

Cost scope: Customer-facility charges, supply component and transport/pooling charges. Operating question: Pool operator, agency agreement, usage qualification and delivery start.

NIPSCO: NIPSCO Choice versus utility supply

The Indiana OUCC describes NIPSCO Choice as voluntary and warns that a customer may or may not save money. NIPSCO still provides transportation and distribution. Its gas tariff lists community zones, so the gas account and applicable zone matter even where electricity comes from another company.

Cost scope: Utility gas-cost adjustment versus supplier supply charges and fees. Operating question: Contract exit charges, switching requirements and return terms.

CenterPoint Energy Indiana South: CenterPoint Energy Indiana South commercial service

Indiana South’s tariff identifies Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Company and its own sales, school/government and volume-based transportation schedules. These differ from Indiana North. Confirm annual and maximum-day usage before treating a large-volume transportation offer as suitable for an Evansville business.

Cost scope: Sales gas cost versus transportation, customer-facility and pooling charges. Operating question: Annual/daily-use qualification, pool operator and service agreement.

Citizens Gas: Citizens Gas delivery agreement

Citizens’ gas delivery agreement addresses utility delivery of gas received from the end-use customer or its third-party supplier at the city gate. It incorporates the service tariffs filed with the IURC. A delivery agreement and the supplier contract cover different obligations.

Cost scope: Utility gas delivery and administrative charges versus third-party gas supply. Operating question: Executed delivery agreement, supplier responsibility and utility acceptance.

Territory and program exceptions to keep visible

NIPSCO’s gas community index places Elkhart in Zone A. Retain the tariff zone when obtaining a transportation or pooling response; a county or mailing city alone is not the operating classification. Elkhart source notes.

A practical Indiana account decision

Compare supplier contract terms, return-to-utility conditions and any switch-related charges. Evaluate a price-protection product separately from ordinary utility gas cost adjustment service.

Record the utility’s legal service company, commercial rate code, billed unit and supply arrangement in one account row. Keep a separate row for each meter even where a supplier offers one master agreement. Normalize gas units before entering rates; compare constant supply prices and fees only after the available service and cost scope are clear.

Use the city guide for community-specific source notes. Exact meter eligibility still requires utility confirmation.

A practical next step

Put the full contract in view.

Ask about your utility, supply terms or renewal. Keep account numbers and documents out of the initial inquiry.
