Define a broker’s work before authorizing it
Supplier coverage
Ask which eligible suppliers were approached, which declined and which offered terms. A comparison should not imply that it represents every available market participant.
Compensation
Request how compensation is calculated, who pays it and whether it is reflected in the quoted rate or separately charged. Supplier-paid does not mean economically costless.
Authority
Separate permission to discuss an account, permission to access data and authority to execute a supply agreement. Retain the approved scope and final decision.
Assess the work against documented deliverables, not a promised saving. A review may appropriately recommend clarifying an existing agreement or retaining utility supply.
Worked review: make the bid log part of the deliverable
Consider a hypothetical review in which five counterparties are contacted, two decline the account, one cannot meet its service conditions and two provide comparable offers. Presenting the result as five available supplier choices would overstate the evidence. A useful bid log records the response, eligibility issue and date for each counterparty.
The comparison should also retain the utility alternative where applicable, the accepted account schedule, fees, exclusions and the person authorizing the choice. Ask whether enrollment tracking and first-bill reconciliation are included in the broker’s scope or require separate work. That record helps the next reviewer understand both the available decision and its limits. It does not prove that every market participant was approached or that the selected offer guarantees a saving.
Ask for a deliverable that an approver can inspect
A useful broker review produces a documented account schedule, eligibility evidence, bid scope, supplier responses, compensation explanation and unresolved issues. EIA’s customer-choice guidance supplies market context, but an intermediary still needs to establish the particular utility route. Ask which suppliers declined or were not approached so the comparison’s coverage is clear. A polished rate table alone does not show the work. EIA: natural gas customer choice and eligibility.
Measure service quality independently of the chosen price
Assess whether the review caught a wrong unit, an omitted fee, a renewal deadline or an ineligible account. Keep those findings distinct from any modeled saving. Request a handoff packet containing signed terms, notices and enrollment confirmation. Establish who handles the first-bill discrepancy and future portfolio changes so the business is not dependent on an undocumented conversation. EIA: natural gas volume, heat content and energy units.
A service handoff with observable completion criteria
Agree what delivery of the engagement means: an eligibility record, comparable proposals, a recommendation with exceptions, approved contract documents and an implementation reconciliation. Name the party responsible for every unresolved issue. For an account that should remain with its current arrangement, request the same written reasoning rather than forcing a transaction to demonstrate activity. Review the intermediary’s authority and compensation whenever the scope changes. Keep the next renewal owner and date in the handoff so an accepted bid does not become an unmanaged account.
Use the appropriate planning tool
Fee-adjusted offer comparison: Use the entered arithmetic to check the bid table independently; the tool does not certify supplier coverage or broker compensation.
